Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga starring Chris Hemsworth to premier at the 77th Festival de Cannes

The rumours had been circulating for a month but today it’s official — George Miller will grace the red carpet at the 77th Festival de Cannes on the French Riviera. The Australian director will be joined by stars Chris Hemsworth,  Anya Taylor-Joy and Tom Burke for the world premiere of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.

This latest addition to the Mad Max action adventure films will screen out of competition at the Grand Théàtre Lumière on Wednesday 15th May, the day after the Festival de Cannes’ opening ceremony. It’s the fifth part of the dystopian saga that fuses the genres of Western, adventure and action film like no other.

The prequel, Miller says, has been brewing in his mind for ten years. It tells the story of young Furiosa (Taylor-Joy) who is seized from the ‘Green Place’ by the Biker Horde, led by Warlord Dementus (Hemsworth). As Dementus battles with his rival, The Immortal Joe (Tom Burke), in the Wasteland, Furiosa must find her way to freedom. The increasingly relevant environmental themes about a resource scarce world will no doubt spark interest in the press conference, held in the Palais on 16th May.

Miller is no stranger to the Croisette. In 2022 he premiered The Thousand Years of Longing (starring Tilda Swinto and Idris Elba) out of competition at the IMAX cinema; he has been two times jury member and, in 2016 was the president  of the jury. The director of Babe, Happy Feet and now five Max Mad films will be celebrated by press, industry and public alike during his trip to the French Riviera. And yes, I’ll be there to share some of the buzz with you!

The Festival de Cannes official selection will be unveiled on Thursday 11th April, 2024.

The 77th Festival de Cannes will take place from Tuesday 14th May to Saturday 25th May.
