A Writer’s Retreat in the Heart of Hobart

A Historic Hotel in the Heart of Hobart

I arrived in Hobart expecting a whirlwind few days of radio interviews, book talks, signings and events.

What I didn’t expect was to find one of Tasmania’s most charming and character-filled hotels.

For the second half of my Tasmanian book tour, I checked into Hadley’s Orient Hotel, a beautifully preserved heritage property right in the centre of Hobart. From the moment I stepped through the doors, it felt less like a hotel and more like stepping into a story.

There are grand staircases, a cosy fireplace, chandeliers, elegant artworks with interactive art trail of the stories behind creatives associated with the hotel and hidden bookshelves waiting to be discovered. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, with a sense of history that somehow manages to feel both timeless and fresh.

A Sanctuary Between Events

My suite quickly became a sanctuary between events. Mornings were spent planning presentations over breakfast and tea.

Afternoons disappeared in a blur of writing, rehearsing and preparing for talks. In quieter moments, I found myself exploring the artwork, wandering the hallways and enjoying the simple pleasure of slowing down in such beautiful surroundings.

Books, Art and Hidden Corners

One of my favourite discoveries was the collection of books scattered throughout the hotel. As both a writer and a reader, I always love finding places that celebrate books and stories. Climbing into bed with Alice in Wonderland instead of a telephone to finish a reel or post was just bliss.

There was also something wonderfully creative about the space. A grand piano, inviting lounges and intimate corners seemed designed for conversation, reflection and inspiration. It was the perfect environment in which to pause between the various stops of my Tasmanian tour. Especially in the spa bath. Heaven.

Leaving a Little Paris Behind

Before leaving, I added a signed copy of The Movie Lover’s Guide to Paris to one of the bookshelves, hoping a future guest might stumble across it and be inspired to embark on a cinematic journey of their own.

Why I’d Return

Travelling for work often means rushing from one commitment to the next. Hotels become places to sleep rather than places to experience. Hadley’s was different. It became one of the best parts of the journey itself.

My time in Tasmania was filled with memorable encounters, fascinating conversations and wonderful audiences, but my stay at Hadley’s was undoubtedly one of the highlights.

If you are planning a visit to Hobart and appreciate heritage, atmosphere, literature and a touch of old-world charm, Hadley’s Orient Hotel is well worth discovering.

And if you happen to find a signed copy of The Movie Lover’s Guide to Paris on a bookshelf in room 301 during your stay, do let me know.

Disclosure: My stay at Hadley’s Orient Hotel was hosted by the hotel during my Tasmanian book tour. All views expressed are my own.
