Sydney’s own Dan Barnett — singer, trombonist, and all-round big band legend — has launched a brand-new album, SNAPSHOT. This marks Barnett’s 10th release, and it’s every bit as bold as you’d expect from a musician whose energy has filled dance floors from Sydney to Paris to Havana.
I met Dan many years ago as he was impressing crowds with his shell playing (!), trombone, vocals and pure charisma at The Basement in Sydney. Bringing together the best local jazz musicians and welcoming guests to sit in, he perfects the art of not just creating great music but also good vibes and ambiance for all audiences. And boy does he know how to swing!
SNAPSHOT is a mix of swinging grooves, Latin sparkle, and soulful ballads that explore love, loss, and life. The 14-piece Dan Barnett Big Band plays arrangements by some of Australia’s finest: Andrew Robertson, Ed Wilson, Kelly Ottaway, Evan Lohning, Cam McAllister and David Basden.

Joining Barnett are an all-star lineup of jazz heavyweights, plus a special appearance by Monica Trapaga.
The first single, “Let Me Be,” is out now on all streaming platforms. The full album has now been released on CD and deluxe double vinyl and is available here.
I’ve had the chance of sitting (well tapping) in with the band several times and here’s a memory that someone in the crowd filmed for me. It’s easy to dance when the musicians are so good. Thanks Dan and the band!
