Cairo Uber Chronicles

Cairo has become one of the most successful destinations worldwide for Uber. During a trip to teach tap dancing in the electric yet chaotic city, I try it out! Here’s my story for Issimo Magazine and a quick phone video memoire from the back seat is below.

Hiring a car in Cairo is not a good idea. That is unless you want to spend your trip sweating behind the wheel between hairy escapes. The traffic is often horrendous and the quickest and slickest drivers rule the road. Finding taxis across the capital is not always easy. Cairo, however, has now become one of the most successful destinations worldwide for Uber. According to The Guardian, more than 40,000 Uber drivers now operate in Cairo only a couple of years after the company started up there. For many, extra income from driving for Uber became a necessity after the economic crisis. The result is a driver arriving quickly, constantly and incredibly cheaply at the tap of an app. And with it taking about an hour to get anywhere, it’s best to embrace the philosophy that life, and travel, is about the journey. These Uber trips certainly guarantee varying Egyptian experiences in themselves. Read about some of mine in @issimomag (search Cairo Uber on their site) or linked up on Ruby TV (link in my bio).
